VOC Meets With Office of Senator Rubio on Uyghur Issue
VOC’s Director of Government Relations, Karina Lipsman, joined fellow human rights groups including the Uyghur Human Rights Project, the Uyghur American Association, Campaign for Uyghurs, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, and the International Religious Freedom Roundtable, to meet with the office of Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and discuss the CCP’s crimes in Xinjiang and the Uyghur Policy Act.
The Uyghur Policy Act of 2023 (S.1252) was introduced in the Senate on April 20, 2023 by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), with cosponsors Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS).
A companion bill in the House, the Uyghur Policy Act of 2023 (H.R.2766), was also introduced on April 20, 2023 by Rep. Young Kim (R-CA-40), lead co-sponsor Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA-6), and 16 other original cosponsors. It passed in the House 414-6 on February 15, 2024.
The full title of the bill is as follows: “A bill to support the human rights of Uyghurs and members of other ethnic groups residing primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and safeguard their district civilization and identity, and for other purposes.”
