CECC Commissioners Use VOC Expert Testimony In Letter To State Dept. On Illegal Organ Trade In PRC

On May 3, 2024, the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) sent a letter to Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, urging the State Department to take action on the issue of organ trading in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The letter cites research from VOC’s China Studies Research Fellow, Matthew Robertson and directly references his 2022 seminal paper in the American Journal of Transplantation where he exposed the organ harvesting epidemic with some Chinese surgeons violating the “dead-donor” rule for organ procurement. The bi-partisan letter, was signed by CECC Chair Representative Christopher Smith (R-NJ), CECC Ranking Member Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Representatives Jennifer Wexton (D-VA), VOC Caucus member Michelle Steel (R-CA), Zach Nunn (R-IA) and Ryan Zinke (R-MT).

In March 2024, Matthew Robertson testified to Congress alongside VOC’s China Studies Research Fellow Ethan Gutmann, on the issue of organ harvesting. For more information on the testimony, click here.
