A Presidential Proclamation on Captive Nations Week

Since the first federal proclamation by President Eisenhower in 1959, U.S. administrations have observed Captive Nations Week to champion the rights of those oppressed by communist and other totalitarian regimes. This year, President Biden outlined the captive nations threat across the globe, writing that “In countries like Belarus, Cuba, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Iran, Nicaragua, the People’s Republic of China, Syria, Russia, Venezuela, and more, millions live without basic freedoms.” In his proclamation, the President also reminded Americans that “freedom is never free and that even the most brutal regime cannot erase the human yearning for dignity and self-determination.”
