Call for Application: Associate Director

POSITION SUMMARY 

The Associate Director supports the implementation of projects and related activities under the direction of the Program Director and alongside the Program Manager. The Associate Director is responsible for maximizing program impact through effective communication, grants-writing and networking. This involves the production of digestible summaries and policy briefs of project work outputs, editing research reports prior to publication, writing compelling fundraising narratives and progress reports, strategize report launches, leveraging strategic coalition-building opportunities, manage relations with key partners and media, support events strategy, planning and execution, and support grants management. This position is located at the office of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) in Washington, D.C.  

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES 

– Communication: In collaboration with the VOC Communications Department, leverage the impact of program achievements through developing and implementing a communication strategy, including through digestible and targeted summaries of our work and its impact, op-eds, press releases, policy briefs, social media texts, etc. 

– Impact Campaigns: Support planning and execution of key publicity and advocacy initiatives such as report rollouts, coordinating teams and partners to ensure broad reach and impact of VOC research, including press releases, factsheets, video, and media work. 

– Fundraising and Grants Proposals: In collaboration with VOC Finance and Development Departments, lead grant writing and submission of fundraising proposals, optimize and edit donor reports, and pursue new funding opportunities. 

– Networking and Coalitions: In collaboration with the VOC Government Relations Department, manage relationships with key partners including relevant government entities and diaspora groups, identify and evaluate new opportunities and potential partners and activities, represent the project in external events, monitor key news and reporting on project-relevant topics. 

– Project implementation: Support grants management and the work of the CFO and Program Manager as needed. 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

– Event logistics: Support execution of planning and logistics for annual academic conference and other events, such as workshops, panels, film screenings, virtual briefings and presentations, and advocacy trips for VOC leadership. 

– Project coordination: Work with external vendors and contractors to execute ad hoc projects including graphic design, video production, writing, editing, translation, external evaluation, and website development. 

– Miscellaneous assistance: Conduct research and tasks as assigned, including taking meeting minutes, drafting recommendation memos and correspondence, and conducting background research on human rights issues and potential partners. 

DESIRED SKILLS 

– Experience in project management or program administration required. 

– Strong writing and editing skills required. Experience in communications, journalism, or marketing strongly preferred. Ability to absorb, filter, and distill disparate information into concise summaries of the key bottom lines. 

– Some experience in grants administration strongly preferred.  

– Experience in government relations, networking and coalition-building strongly preferred. 

– Familiarity with human rights research, atrocity documentation and accountability efforts preferred. 

– Flexible, nimble, able to manage multiple competing priorities under tight deadlines. 

– Highly organized, impact-oriented, strong work ethic, and pro-active leadership mentality. 

– Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and if possible graphic design (InDesign, Canva). Tech-savvy with ability to quickly identify, learn, and effectively use new software, online platforms, and digital tools. 

– Creativity and good judgment in incorporating visual and graphic design elements into VOC products to enhance their ability to engage and educate new audiences.
