Town Council of Miami Lakes, Florida Supports Immediate Development of Curriculum Educating on Crimes of Communism
The Town of Miami Lakes Council finalized Resolution 21-1757, sponsored by Councilman Josh Dieguez (Seat 4) and championed by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) that supports the immediate development and implementation of the curriculum set forth in Florida House Bill 5 and urging for Miami-Dade County Public Schools to adopt the policies in an expedited manner for the upcoming school year. A copy of the Resolution will also be sent to all Miami-Dade School Board Members and the Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools. VOC Director of Government Relations Kristina Olney presented before the Miami Lakes Council in support of the resolution in June.
On June 22, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill requiring that all Florida schools teach their students about the crimes of communist regimes. The legislation, which was championed by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) and passed in the Florida House of Representatives on April 2 and in the Florida Senate on April 27, requires schools to include in their curriculum a comparative discussion of the political ideologies of communism and totalitarianism with the principles of freedom and democracy essential to the founding principles of the United States.
