Authorized in 1993 by a unanimous Act of Congress, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) is an educational, research, and human rights nonprofit organization devoted to commemorating the more than 100 million victims of communism around the world and to pursuing the freedom of those still living under totalitarian regimes.
VOC is seeking a full-time Museum & Education Assistant to join the organization’s team in Washington, DC.
MUSEUM & EDUCATION ASSISTANT
Summary
This position is the primary point of contact for all museum visitors, welcoming all guests with a friendly and personable manner. This position assists with the successful and consistent planning, coordination, and execution of events, group visits, educational visits, and VIP museum tours. This position is responsible for working with education-related items, such as ownership of the college internship program, fulfillment of specialty educational grants, representing VOC at educational expos, and working with partners to expand and develop the education of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation. The Museum and Education Associate will report to the Chief Operating Officer.
Duties and Responsibilities
Museum
- Process point-of-sale transactions for ticket purchases or donations with cash or credit card
- Assist with museum tasks as assigned, such as data entry and uploads, mailings, and exhibit assistance
- Anticipate visitor needs and give proactive suggestions to facilitate a quality museum experience
- Proactively think of new operational changes for the front desk to heighten guest experience
- Ability to remain professional under pressure in a sometimes crowded and noisy lobby, while maintaining the ability to be flexible and to think-on-your-toes during possibly stressful conditions during events or visits
- Answer phone, check voicemail regularly, and return calls in a timely manner
- Ability to understand the museum galleries and mission effectively, (e.g. after proper training, provide a tour, introduce VOC to a school group, or train others on front desk operations)
- Must be punctual and dependable
Facilities
- Receive, respond, and resolve facility maintenance requests in a timely manner
- Serve as day-to-day liaison to contracted service providers and maintenance vendors to ensure contracts are being fulfilled and duties are being performed
- Research, identify, and engage new vendors to meet budgetary needs and economy of scale
- Work closely with the Camden Grand Parc Apartments facility managers as the VOC museum shares several large-scale facilities with them
- Manage event production facility needs
- Demonstrate accuracy and high attention to detail
Education
- Manager the VOC internship program, receive applications, track applicants and interview candidates; part of the selection of interns and their placement upon acceptance and their school reviews following their internships
- Active relationship building with local schools, fellowship programs, and student tour groups to encourage repeat visits to the museum and attendance at our public events
- Represent VOC at educational expositions as a booth coordinator
- Assist with educational grant requirements
Other Duties
- Assist CEO and other VOC Directors and Board of Trustee members as requested
- Greet donors, diplomats and high-level foreign and domestic officials as part of front desk duties
- Aid the Director of Development with managing guest data and sending mailings
- Assist with tasks as assigned
Desired Skills
- Computer proficient: Basic Microsoft suite including Outlook, Word and Excel
- Basic math skills
- Facility and / or project management
- Bilingual a plus (any language will be considered)
- Events, museum or retail experience a plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to make eye contact and smile
- Ability to assist with tasks that could require lifting (up to 20lbs) and bending
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
Compensation and Benefits: The salary range for this position is $45,000-$55,000 annually. VOC offers a generous and comprehensive benefits program, including excellent health insurance, term life insurance, and paid leave.
