On July 28, 2024, the Venezuelan people went to the polls. All accounts point to a resounding defeat of socialist authoritarian Nicolás Maduro by opposition candidate Edmundo González. Unwilling to relinquish power, Maudro falsely claimed victory and began cracking down on those who dared to stand in his way.

The latest analysis of the situation includes a new report from VOC and partner organization Transparencia Electoral entitled Preliminary Report on the Venezuelan 2024 Presidential Elections discussing the corrupt and fraudulent electoral process.

5:00 PM EST: All eyes are on Caracas as the Venezuelan people continued their march for liberty on July 31. With protests spreading to every major city in the Latin American country, Nicolás Maduro’s Attorney General confirmed that more than 1,000 people have been detained by regime forces. Despite harsh oppression, opposition leader María Corina Machado called for a new wave of protests and President-elect Edmundo González demanded respect for the election results. This call was amplified by world leaders after the only monitoring group allowed to observe the elections concluded that the vote could not be considered democratic. History is in the making as the Venezuelan people boldly declare an end to socialism, one act of bravery at a time.

As Venezuelans took to the streets on July 30, opposition leader María Corina Machado called out the Maduro regime during a rally in Caracas. “Just as we won, we will collect. We managed to get Edmundo 70% of the votes. We united a country…What we are fighting against is fraud.” Calling for a mass mobilization of her supporters, Machado also urged the military to stand with the people against tyranny. Across the country, protestors documented beatings and shootings in startling videos on social media. The socialist regime quickly labeled the uprising as an imperialist coup directed from “North America,” shut down internet access in the capital, and moved to arrest opposition leaders.
