Presidential Elections in Venezuela 2024: Competing Under Authoritarian Conditions

The 2024 Venezuelan Elections approach, and the world remains vigilant as preparations are made for Election Day when millions will cast their vote.

A new report from Transparencia Electoral and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation entitled Presidential Elections in Venezuela 2024: Competing Under Authoritarian Conditions, discusses key developments in the autocratic nature of the 2024 elections.

The report highlights new information on violations of the electoral schedule that was issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE) to political parties, constituting a clear transgression of electoral rules.

There have been verifiable instances of electoral violence, which according to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) can consist of random or organized acts intended to intimidate, physically harm, destroy public or private property, or otherwise influence the electoral process.

Additionally, the CNE-initiated training process for polling station members has come into question with reports of insufficient training materials, inadequate preparation time, and affiliations with the ruling party.
