Every year, VOC commemorates what happened on June 4, 1989, when the Chinese Communist Party crushed a massive pro-democracy movement by sending tanks into Tiananmen Square. Beijing has since erased all mention of June 4 from its history. We still do not know the death toll.
This year, VOC gathered on June 4th at the Victims of Communism Memorial on the corners of New Jersey and Massachusetts Avenues NW, to light a candle and remember those who lost their lives to Beijing’s onslaught.
This year’s ceremony featured insight from:
-Frances Hui: Policy and Advocacy Manager for the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation; former student leader in Hong Kong
-Arthur Liu: Chinese dissident and human rights activist; father of Olympic champion Alysa Liu.
-Joey Siu: Spokesperson, Amnesty International Hong Kong Overseas
-Piero Tozzi: Senior Director for China Policy, America First Policy Institute
-Jan Jekielek: Senior Editor, The Epoch Times
-Ilshat H. Kokbore: Research Director, Center for Uyghur Studies
