Chen Qiushi

Chen Qiushi is a Chinese lawyer, activist, and popular citizen journalist who became widely known for providing firsthand coverage of the 2019-20 Hong Kong protests and the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic which included criticism of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) response. He was last heard from on February 6, 2020, after being detained by the CCP. The CCP has allegedly stated Chen was detained for the purpose of coronavirus quarantine; critics, including media freedom groups, have expressed skepticism, and have unsuccessfully called on the CCP to allow outside contact with Chen. He was awarded the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation’s Human Rights Award in 2020.
