Authorized in 1993 by a unanimous Act of Congress, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) is an educational, research, and human rights nonprofit organization devoted to commemorating the more than 100 million victims of communism around the world and to pursuing the freedom of those still living under totalitarian regimes.
VOC is seeking a full-time Director of Education to join the organization’s team in Washington, DC.
MANAGER/DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Role Summary
The Manager/Director of Educational Programs is responsible for all aspects of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation’s Education Program. This position manages K-12 education programs and college events, conducts outreach to educators, manages VOC’s internship program, represents VOC in a variety of educational settings, and is responsible for strategic planning for academic initiatives and program areas, as well as other related duties.
Responsibilities
1. Middle and High School Events and Outreach
- Oversee and coordinate the educational and outreach efforts of the Foundation to educational audiences (e.g. local schools, school tours, educators’ conferences, etc.).
- Coordinate and oversee the revision and dissemination of VOC curriculum.
- Develop and implement a strategy to maintain and deepen current relationships with high schools, students, educators, volunteers, and educational associations.
- Oversee and implement VOC’s professional development program for teachers (e.g. webinars, workshops, seminars, and fellowships).
- Support, as appropriate, the development department’s efforts to secure financial support for the foregoing activities.
- Represent VOC at various in-house and external events.
2. University Events and Outreach
- Support the educational and outreach efforts of the Foundation at the college level both in the U.S. and internationally.
- As appropriate, assist in the development of a strategy to increase the number of interactions between the Foundation and college students and professors.
- Oversee the VOC internship program.
- Coordinate with VOC leadership in organizational support of the VOC Academic Council.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
Education: M.A. in History, Political Science, or related field (Ph.D. desirable).
Experience:
- Between 7-12 years of experience in academia, government, or non-profit organizations.
- Significant expertise in the topics of communism and totalitarianism.
- Significant experience lecturing at the university level.
- Published scholarly works related to communism and totalitarianism.
Skills include:
- High level of confidentiality.
- Excellent organizational skills, be detail-oriented, precise, reliable, and proactive.
- Ability to excel in a multicultural, fast-paced work environment and be able to effectively shift priorities and multi-task.
- Strong written and oral communication skills required to interface effectively with all levels of staff and donors.
- Demonstrated high-quality writing and editing skills.
