Vladimir Bukovsky
Mr. Vladimir Bukovsky (1942-2019) was a Russian dissident and human rights activist. He was expelled from Moscow University for writing an essay that exposed the failings of the Communist Youth League and arrested shortly after for making and possessing anti-Soviet materials. As with many other dissidents, Bokuvsky was declared mentally ill and schizophrenic by Soviet doctors and institutionalized and imprisoned for a total of 12 years. He was deported to the West after his release in a prisoner swap. He authored multiple works on Soviet human rights abuses, primarily focused on the political abuse of psychiatry in the Soviet Union. He was a member of both the Advisory Council for the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation as well as a member of the International Council for the Human Rights Foundation, and received the Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom in 2002.
