One of Cuba’s most prominent human rights activists is in the US to push for a halt or suspension of US-Cuba trade and investment changes that he and other leaders say are enriching and empowering the Castro regime. In an exclusive interview with FoxNews.com, Guillermo Fariñas said the Trump administration should halt or undo the Obama administration’s move to open up trade and business deals with Cuba until the Cuban government commits to making democratic reforms.

The ruling Chinese Communist Party has established a pattern of “alarming” interference in Hong Kong in recent years that could set the pattern for its growing influence in the region, a US congressional panel has warned. The bipartisan US-China Economic and Security Review Commission cited the “chilling” abduction and detention of five booksellers based in Hong Kong as well as continuing pressure on media and academic freedoms in the former British colony.

Hong Kong’s leader said Chinese President Xi Jinping has affirmed his handling of a political dispute in the Chinese-ruled territory in which two recently elected legislators were barred from taking their seats. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said Xi has “fully affirmed our work, including a series of problems arising from our recent handling of the Legislative Council oath.”
Almost Half of Residents of Ukraine Want Decommunization
Some half of the population of Ukraine supports the idea of a ban on Communist ideology and over 40 percent support the dismantling of monuments to Lenin, according to a study conducted by the Ukrainian sociological group Rating in November. According to the results of the poll, which were published on Nov. 17, 48 percent of respondents want a ban on Communist ideology in Ukraine.
Venezuela Frees Jailed Activist, Opposition Urges More Releases
Venezuela has freed an activist accused of fomenting violent protests in 2014, but opposition leaders said on Friday it was not enough and demanded President Nicolás Maduro’s government release all 100 or so jailed opponents. The liberation of Rosmit Mantilla, a well-known activist for the hardline Popular Will party, came amid Vatican-brokered talks between the socialist government and opposition that are focusing on prisoners among other issues.
