20th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony

Every year on the anniversary of the dedication of the VOC Memorial, many embassies, dignitaries, human rights organizations, and private individuals lay wreaths during the Roll Call of Nations. It is a moving experience to see dozens of beautiful wreaths around the base of the Goddess of Democracy statue.

At this ceremony, VOC awarded, for the 59th and 60th time since 1999, the Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom. The medal recipients are Mustafa Dzhemilev, political leader of the Crimean Tartars, and Myrolsav Marynovych, Vice-Rector of Ukrainian Catholic University and founder of Amnesty International Ukraine. Both these Ukrainian leaders have fought for decades against Soviet communism and for human rights.

Also featuring remarks by H.E. Václav Klaus, former President of the Czech Republic;  Ms. Liliia Muslimova, Advisor to Mustafa Dzhemilev and spokesman for the Tatar Mejlis; Dr. Lee Edwards, Chairman, VOC; Mrs. Annette Lantos, Chairman, Lantos Foundation for Human Rights and Justice; Congressman Dana Rohrabacher; Congressman John Shimkus; Mr. Shin Dong-hyuk, only known escapee from North Korea’s Camp 14; and Marion Smith, Executive Director, VOC.
