Panel Discussion, Witness Project Screening, and Reception

A panel with leading academics from the United States and Europe discussed the reality of life under communist rule throughout the Soviet Union and what living within the “Soviet sphere” meant for populations of the Captive Nations of Europe in the years between 1945 to 1989. Panelists also discussed how the history of Soviet rule is being contested in modern Russia and elsewhere, as part of a global information war.

With remarks by Representative Dennis Ross, Florida’s Fifteenth Congressional District, and Congressman John Shimkus, Illinois’ Fifteenth Congressional District.
Speakers will include Dr. Lee Edwards, David Kramer, Prof. Alonzo Hamby, Paul Goble, and Alexander Podrabinek

“Witness Project” Screening
4:30-5:00 p.m.
With remarks by Daniel Magay, Hungarian Olympic athlete who escaped to American during in 1956, and Nal Oum, a Cambodian medical doctor and among the only “intellectuals” to escape the Khmer Rouge death camps.

Commemoration Reception
5:00-6:00 p.m.
With remarks by Representative Marcy Kaptur (D-OH)
Program includes keynote speaker, drinks, and hors d’oeuvres
